Acceptance of Meeting Minutes from December 13, 2019

 

South African educators arriving via bus from UMass-Lowell, dinner will be provided after meeting

 

Officer’s Reports

Vice President

  • Nothing to report

 

Secretary

  • Nothing to report

 

Treasurer

  • Budget update – approx. $134,000
    • Dues payments to be made to MTA

 

Membership

  • Let Membership Chair know about any new hires in each of the buildings

 

Unit E

  • Emailed Student Service coordinators about evaluations
    • Jan 15 deadline for observations and feedback
    • Jan 30 mid year meetings
  • Unit E Sub form to be distributed when Admin locates it

 

Committee Reports

 

Mentor Steering

  • PK is being replaced by Julie Shore or other Admin; long term replacement not communicated

 

Scholarship

  • Current balance – $1,420.41
    • $100 in Venmo to be transferred, approx. $282 raised in December
  • 4 scholarships recipients from 2019
    • Transcripts being requested
    • Each receiving $250 if they meet requirements
  • Application for Future Educator Scholarship is in the works and to be presented to high school for inclusion in packets and Scholarship Night

 

NCTA

  • Courses out – registration open until Jan. 15

 

Old Business

  • Course reimbursement/graduate credit update
    • Julie Shore has sent out forms
    • Keep copies of any correspondence (emails)
    • Hear back within 21 days, let CTA know if you don’t so we can assist
    • If denied, goes to 4 person committee to review
      • Looking for one volunteer to serve on that committee
    • Don’t be nervous if they reach out for more clarification
    • Once the course is complete and you have a grade of B or higher, email to start the reimbursement process
  • Paper Contract update
    • Over break, lawyer reached out about one more issue
    • Hoping to have a finalized copy by next week
  • Prep time
    • Inequities
    • Using for meetings/trainings for ELA = missed prep
      • Request to reassign teams to avoid missing preps was declined
      • Leaders explained today (half day on Jan. 8) that “CLG is not PD”
      • “If prep is that important, then just walk out.” – Admin
      • Next contract’s language needs to clear AND equitable
  • Team Leaders
    • Admin keeps pushing the positive feedback about program
      • Feedback needs to be honest – PARTICIPATE!
    • Any contradictions, especially in writing, should be shared with Yan
  • Early Adopters
  • Pests update
    • Rat poison in vents situation?
    • Plowing – timing and snowfall amounts cause safety, parking, drop off issues
  • Attendance data
    • Can we see data by school?
    • Trends – grade level, days of the week?

 

New Business

  • Yan running for NEA Director – lobby nationally on behalf of Massachusetts, twice a year meetings in Washington DC
    • Union positions will be opening in the near future and we need people to step up, if interested you can shadow current 
  • Assistant Director of Student Services Search
    • New position that handles out-of-district placements
    • Interviews are complete
  • Assistant Superintendent Search
    • Take the opportunity to sit on these committees if they are offering – it’s out chance to share our voice
  • School Start Date
    • Latest date
      • Teachers report September 1 and 2
      • Students begin September 3
      • Start times have been adjusted
      • Find K start dates, orientation dates
  • Open CTA positions
    • Shadowing possible if interested in learning more about a position

 

Other Items

  • Building-based issues/updates
    • LUCE – Exec. Council met with Principal today to discuss building issues; another meeting coming up

 

Introduction of Phitsamay Uy from UMass-Lowell with her students from South Africa

  • Learning about collaborative learning, restorative justice, and union skills
